Plant introduction: Tongkat Ali (scientific name: Eurycoma longifolia Jack.) is an evergreen small tree of the Simaroubaceae and Malayan ginseng genus. It is 4 to 6 meters tall and can reach up to 18 meters at the highest. The trunk diameter can reach 30.5 cm. The roots are pale yellow; the leaves are alternate and odd-pinnately compound, about 30 to 100 cm long. The leaflets are opposite or nearly opposite, long ovoid or lanceolate; the panicle is terminal or axillary, with pale purple-red color; the drupe is about 12 mm long, elliptical, and turns from yellow to reddish-brown when mature. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from August to September. Tongkat Ali is mainly distributed in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam; it likes humid acidic sandy soil and mostly grows in beach forests, primary or secondary forests at an altitude of less than 700 meters.
